Is Your Washing Machine Making You Sick?

GE WBSR3000GWS 27in 3.2 cu. Ft. Top-Load Washer - White
I read today that, because mold and bacteria flourish where a wet area is found, your washing machine can be the source of your allergy eyes, runny nose, or even asthma attack. Because your washing machine stays wet for awhile while it's not in use, bacteria and mold might be having a party in there.  To prevent these things from growing inside your machine, and in turn, on your clothes, make sure to keep the lid open after use...just long enough for the inside to dry.

Your Dishwasher : Not Just for Washing Dishes anymore!

Haier HDC1804TW 4-Place-Setting Tabletop DishwasherToday I read a great tip about alternate uses for your dishwasher.  It seems that it's a great way to make short work of cleaning your child's plastic toys (ones without batteries, of course).  Just put them in the trays, load up on detergent, and wash!

(Note: It might be best not to use the "heat dry" cycle.  You wouldn't want any of the plastic to warp!)

Be Generous. You Might Live Longer.

The Generosity Factor: Discover the Joy of Giving Your Time, Talent, and TreasureToday I read that a study conducted at the University of Michigan concluded that people who are generous in both tangible and emotional ways , add years to their lives.

According to the Mayo Clinic, University of Texas, and various other authorities on the subject, here are a few more ways to add years to your life:
1.  Be optimistic.
2.  Eat flavonoid rich fruits.
3.  Communicate with your friends.
4.  Run
5.  Sleep-- no less than 6 hours, no more than 9  (try 7 to 8)
6.  Worship regularly

Don't Toss That! How To Save On Food.

Ziploc Freezer Bag, Pint, 20-Count (Pack of 12)Today I read a clever little tip about food that is about to hit its expiration date, or is showing signs that it has just about had it.  Freeze it before you lose it!  For example, do you have some onions, tomatoes, garlic, or other fresh herbs or veggies in that produce drawer that you're just not going to get to before it goes bad?  Put it in a freezer bag and freeze it until you're ready to use it.  Bottom line: Saving food saves you money!

Is Your Pet a Backseat Driver? He Should Be!

Solvit 62296 Pet Vehicle Safety Harness, LargeToday I read that keeping your pet in the front seat, as much as they might like it, is very dangerous for your pooch or kitty.  Although this does seem like an obvious statement, it is rare to see a dog restrained in the backseat with the appropriate safety harness.  If your pet is in the front seat during an accident, the force of the airbag can cause serious injuries, and might even be lethal.  So, teach your dog to be a backseat driver --- it's the safest way to travel!

Depressed? Say Hello to Carbs!

Hodgson Mill Organic Whole Wheat Penne with Milled Flaxseed, 12-Ounce Units (Pack of 8)Today I read that swearing off  of carbs may be making you depressed!  No, not because you "miss" them, but because carbohydrates release serotonin, a "well-known contributor to feelings of well-being".  If your body does not get enough carbs, your brain will stop regulating serotonin, which will make you  feel "down in the dumps".  Instead of swearing off of them completely, try a diet that includes complex carbs, such as whole grains and veggies (do your research or ask your Doctor if you have questions).  And don't forget to smile!

Alfalfa : Good for Cholesterol, but...

ALFALFA SEEDS (1KG) Brand: Sprout MasterToday I read that adding alfalfa to your diet helps to reduce your "bad" cholesterol (LDL). However, it should also be noted that it is found to increase the risk of bleeding when used with drugs like warfarin (brand name Coumadin®), which are used to prevent blood clots from forming.

Green Tea vs Your Anticoagulant?

Davidson's Tea Bulk, Gunpowder Green, 16-Ounce BagToday I read that that Green Tea might fight the effectiveness of your anticoagulant (such as warfarin and heparin).  This is because Green Tea contains vitamin K, which is used in the body to clot blood.  If you are using Green Tea for it's many health benefits, but are also using an anticoagulant, check with your doctor.

Ketchup. Good for the Heart?

Heinz Tomato Ketchup, 20-Ounce Easy Squeeze Bottles (Pack of 6)Today I read that a daily dose of ketchup (3 to 4 tablespoons daily on your food) lowers one's risk of cardiovascular disease.  What's the magic ingredient?  Lycopene, of course.  The highest levels of vitamins A, C, and E are found in organic ketchup, though a good, old bottle of regular Heinz contains Lycopene as well .

Is your Chicken 100% Natural? Maybe Not.

500 Low Sodium Recipes: Lose the salt, not the flavor in meals the whole family will loveToday I read that even if your chicken is advertised as "100% Natural", it might still be injected with broth, salt water, or seaweed extract--- all of which contain A LOT of salt.  Make sure you check the label!

No More Food Stains in Plastic Storage Containers

PAM All Natural Original Canola Oil No-Stick Cooking Spray (2 Pack) 12 oz CansToday I read that if you give a quick spray of Pam or other cooking spray on the inside of your containers (tupperware, etc...) before storing food in them, you can prevent stains from sauces, etc...

Beat the Summer Heat --- Place a fan in the doorway!

Lasko 4000 Air Stik Ultra-Slim Oscillating FanToday I read a handy tip about fan placement in the house, which will also help keep a/c cooling costs down.  Place your fan in your open basement doorway facing your living space (unless you have a lot of mold or radon levels down there).  This will pull cool air from the basement and into the upstairs level.

Onions and Your Dog

The Complete Healthy Dog Handbook: The Definitive Guide to Keeping Your Pet Happy, Healthy & Active Through Every Stage of LifeToday I read that onions in any form (powdered, fresh, etc...) can cause anemia in your dog by destroying the dog's red blood cells. I also read that eating small doses over a long period of time, or just having one great big dose will have the same affect.  Symptoms to look for include vomiting, diarrhea, and breathlessness.
