Smells like fish?

My comments about staying away from fish that "smells fishy" are often met with puzzled looks or smarty pants remarks such as "It's fish. What do you expect it to smell like?"  Well, today I read that culinary students are taught that FRESH fish smells like the water it was swimming in. OLD fish smells like fish.  And there you have it.
